When used well, patterns can be a great way to add an extra element to your designs that take them to the next level in terms of aesthetics. Creating your own repeating patterns is one way to go about this, but it’s not always something you want to spend a lot of time on, especially if you’re working with a tight budget. And why reinvent the wheel when there are thousands of patterns out there that could work?
Design templates help build an identity for any particular website. Since the techniques are changing very rapidly within the industry, one must be updated all the time. Many designers download the pre-built CSS templates to explore more. At many stages, designers seek help in the form of inspiration that would help them get back to their creativity track. Or they just want to learn a thing or two about the structure of web-sites and build their own projects on top of “bulletproof” templates.
Movie posts are tough, because they become so outdated so quickly. I do think that it’s good to look at these type of posts because it’s a quick glimpse into web design trends in the movie industry.Comparing the trends a year from now, would be something that could have some value. The following sites are from movies that are in theatres and the news within the past or future 3 months.
One of the basic principles in website design is using the grid system. Grid system is used widely in print as well. For the designers, it helps to organise information into a clear easy flow layout.
There are tools that make our lives much easier. However, finding those obscure time-savers which would save time in every single project isn’t easy and requires a lot of time. At Smashing Magazine, we are regularly looking for such useful tools, gather them, review them and eventually prepare for a truly smashing round-up. Such posts are quite lengthy and extensive, but they are always worth checking out.
Do you remember your first form? The first time you realised you could send emails through your site, thanks to a hosted service like Bravenet (remember them?!).
Or perhaps you hacked together a cgi script or even some PHP. But when that first email arrived with the subject line ‘test’ you realised that your website had now become interactive. You could now not only interact with your users, but also tailor your site based on their input.
In that post we touched briefly on the idea of using CSS3 to make form inputs that look and feel the same in all WebKit browsers across platforms. Today I’d like to share some specific examples of how we did that.
